Ok, new WORST Survey. Worst city?

Rochester, NY on a weekend is one hell of a quiet place (and a shithole too) - just like that other poster said about Detroit. It's like some crap Charlton Heston movie, walking around an entire city with not a soul to be seen, except the one guy in the hotel lobby.

I wouldn't want to go to Flint, MI after watching "Roger & Me".

I hate every industrialized smelly shithole rendering plant town in New Jersey. Nice place to put Newark airport, dickheads! Right in the middle of a hundred ozone-destroying gas-belching chemical plants - now that'll spur tourism to the area!

As far as the biggest shithole I've ever been to... It'd have to be Gary, Indiana--THE ARMPIT OF THE WORLD. Jesus Crap-- I have never, EVER been to a city with such a strong aroma as that one.

-and-

Atlanta. I endured this place for four months. I thought I was going crazy I hated it so much. I was gonna list reasons but that would fragment and compartmentalize the absolute solidity of the miserableness of this shithole.

I was in Atlanta last spring, and I personally found it so shitty it was funny. In the neighborhood around the Underground mall, a lot of the drug dealers took a liking to me, and even tried to sell me stuff. I bought a headband that made me look like the tennis player guy in The Royal Tennenbaums.
if i got lasik surgery on one eye, i could wear a monacle.

Hoo boy! Bomberz already named four of my top five:

Flint: Well argued already.
Kalamazoo: At a red light at Lovers' Lane and Cork St. I saw two guys bashing their Econoline vans into one another, laughing. And I thought it was hard to find kicks in Syracuse . . .
Oklahoma City: A flat, bleak grid of homeless shelters. It had the odor of doom even before McVeigh showed up.
Buffalo: Truly hostile and worn-out. Mitigating factor: a liquor store on every corner.

I'd nominate Albuquerque as well. Full of flaky and desperate people who smell bad.

I must take issue with Detroit as a nominee. Sure, it's a ghost town, but much of its crumbling architecture -- as well as its French-influenced layout -- is truly beautiful, if you like that sort of thing. Michigan Avenue from the west of downtown is a marvel of alarming sights and odors. Niagara Falls, NY is also a hellhole, but it boasts one of America's best collections of decrepit neon signs. (Did I mention Syracuse?)

Michigan has a number of wasteland communities:

Detroit, which is not just dangerous, desolate, and often on fire, but increasingly given over to dreams of being economically saved by the emergence of casinos and the cultural vacuums they produce.

Flint, which, if a human, would have been very high on Kevorkian's 'things-to-do' list.

Benton Harbor, which would look hopelessly devoid of life even if it weren't abutted to a wealthy lake-front community.

Aside from Michigan...

Houston is indeed one of the worst cities ever to sit atop a swamp. Truly awful. The humidity is unbearable in the summer and completely robs you of any dream that the place might one day catch fire. Texas, as a general rule, is a depressing backwater whose vast natural beauty is ruined by the morons who live there. Gary, Ind. is without peer, really. That anyone lives there is testament to man's remnant genetic relations to Rattus Norvegicus.

Mobile Alabama

There is no competition. The city I live in is the biggest piece of shit in the United States. In the past three years, only two bands played in the town(bars) I actually cared to go see. We never have concerts I mean never. I have never seen a concert in my city. It is a small city 400,000 pop. If you aspire to do anything other than waiting tables, digging ditches, or some other repetitive labor, you need to move away. The jobs are not here. Its like Doctors, lawyers, and then peons. We do not even have a real recording studio for bands. the only studios in town do jingles and shit like that. So, all you have are home studios. Though someone is building a nice one, finally, Its about time. the Schools are pure shit, and people are close minded. The only bands clubs let play here are jam and blues. The will never let an original band have a chance.
