Not in the US, and I'm paying 50 euros for the amp, so I don't want to pay much more than 100 euros. That limits my options hugely, I know.Garth wrote: Mon Mar 11, 2024 1:15 pm can you specify "cheap"? like below what price?
Also are you in the US because I'd think availability is going to drive your cost-decision more than anything else if you aren't.
Re: Small questions that don't fit anywhere
1822IDK that you would get something half-way reliable for < 100 new. You might be best off trying to find something used. Hard to beat Eminence Delta or Kappas as replacement speakers, and they're usually fairly priced.
But Peavey can be a pain in the ass for fitting other-branded speakers, so maybe want to just pull the OEM mfg numbers of that existing blown one and see if someone has a similar one on ebay? Also Peavey Black Widows aren't terrible speakers for bass and usually pretty decently priced if you could find one of those.

1823Yeah, it was good thing you asked, made me think about it. There is a couple of used Electro Voice EVM15L near me for 100€, so that's an option, but if they are difficult to fit there, then I don't know.Garth wrote: IDK that you would get something half-way reliable for < 100 new. There is also a Fender Rumble 60 for 120€, so I might have to go with that. I don't want to spend too much on this amp, but I have to get something because a Fender Mustang 50W just won't cut it with bass

Re: Small questions that don't fit anywhere
1824the EVM isn't a bad choice, especially for the sound (& it's obv a fan favorite around here)...but they are not the most reliable speakers. Who knows, it might even turn that practice amp into a recording amp.
That being said, I've reconed a couple EVM-15B (and one L I think) now (and I had NO experience doing this before hand) from a complete kit w/ very good results. Haven't priced the kit lately but was like $70 the last time I did it.

Re: Small questions that don't fit anywhere
1825I admit I have a cab problem. I really dig how different speakers work with different heads. It's a problem, I know. So the last thing I should be asking about is buying another cab, but here we are. Most of my cabs are big (4x12s, 2x15s), but the size clubs we play nowadays, it feels like overkill. I have a great 1x15 when I'm playing bass with a Kappalite in it that is light and fucking delivers, and that's what I bring most of the time and my back she is so happy.
What would be a good similar solution in a 2x12? I use a 70s OR120, but it doesnt get cranked as most of my sound comes from pedals.

Re: Small questions that don't fit anywhere
1826Like you are mentioning for the bass w/ the Kappalite, just in the past few years I've been finally reading and hearing a lot of good things (and have more than one of these come on stage) about some of the newer neodymium magnet speakers for guitar. I'd imagine at this point there's going to be a neo-version of most of the more popular speaker varieties these days. The EVM clone that Eminence makes is one example.
The standard Avatar 2x12 cabinet for guitar even loaded with standard ceramic or alnico speakers is not a brutal backbreaker and is solid + sounds good. I'd imagine w/ a pair of ND magnet speakers it'd be exactly what you would be looking for. The only downside is that you'll need a stand to put it on so you can hear more accurately what it sounds like vs it blasting your knees. If you have your amp head in a case, that's usually the way to go there though: head case on the bottom, cab on top of that, and amp on top of that.
EDIT: just one other point to add too is that even w/out neo magnets, outside a few of the old school cast frames, 12" guitar speakers are not usually brutally heavy anyway. I sold that Avatar 2x12 I had to Ike and it had a pair of Celestions in it I bought from FM Eephus and it still is pretty easy to move around & sounds great. Ike's been using that cab all the time for at least 5 years now.
You can get a vertical 2x12 slant cab route but unless you go Quilter or along those lines, you risk the dreaded mushroom stack and no one wants that.
I think it's worth mentioning that you might lose a little low end going this route, but I think 2x12 is a little the best of both (and honestly, if the band has a bass player, a little less low end is going to make most band's overall mix sound better anyway imo). I generally find 1x12 is a bridge too far for folks like us that love the big dumb loud cabinet experience (except for recording, leads, etc.)

Re: Small questions that don't fit anywhere
1827The most useful thing I’ve seen is a 2x12 Mesa cabinet (Friedman too) that is both vertical and has the angled top speaker. It’s wide enough for most heads. The down side is that it is expensive and that it’s only a little smaller than a 4x12. But it should theoretically be 15-20 lbs lighter. The EHX/Sovtek one seems too narrow but is a lot cheaper.Owen wrote: Tue Mar 12, 2024 9:21 am I admit I have a cab problem. I really dig how different speakers work with different heads. 1828I really like my Marshall 1936 with 75w Celestions. It can handle the Orange.

Re: Small questions that don't fit anywhere
1829I'm on my second Avatar 2x12 cabinet and they're excellent (the first was stolen). Not slanted, but you can set them up vertically if you don't mind the T shape of a head sticking out on the sides. You definitely need to be a good 8 feet away to hear it well when it's placed horizontally on the floor, which is a surprisingly rare feat in most venues.

I think the best cab to get is the one you find locally for the right price. They’re expensive to ship and take up a lot of space so it’s totally a buyers market out there.
Lower wattage speakers always sound more alive and excitable to me, but that can get you into trouble in a 2x12 if you’re running higher wattage amps.
