1864Any opinions on a pair of Audio Technica 4051 vs Shure KSM137? Need a utility pair, maybe more for acoustic stuff than anything else, but still need some all arounders. Would probably prefer the KSM141 for omni , but those are too expensive right now.
Also, if a Beyer M88 is too boomy on my voice - what are you doing while tracking? Move it back? HPF? Grab another mic?
I was holding it for scratch vocals and the proximity effect was a little too happening, though I was still careful not to eat the mic. My inclination would be to move it further back, but at that point, wouldn’t a condenser be a better option? There’s no reason I couldn’t put it on a stand and back away a bit, I’m just sort of doing a gut check here.

1865I've never used the AT 4051. I've been using KSM137 and 141s for 10+ years. Reliable, clear, utilitarian, unsexy. They are very useful. I particularly like them on overheads but they can get the job done for any acoustic instrument.
On the other front, proximity effect is a consideration with many great vocal mics. They all have different optimal distances in different situations. There's nothing wrong with backing off a dynamic mic, but I get what you mean. When I've recorded with an SM7 or an RE20 getting right on top of the mic just felt right, probably because it's the most like band practice.

1867I've been satisfied with it on acoustic guitar. I got one used for barely $100 (cardioid capsule only) which is tough to beat.

If buying a microphone with an "Omni..." option is not in the budget now?

1869Another vote for the Oktavas...although I was able to get mine years ago at the $100 range as FMKR mentioned above.
Honestly though, IDK if I'd pay going rates based on above, I'd have to really give that some consideration. These were bang-for-the buck mics for sure and in that price range there are a lot of options.

1870Thanks, I’ll add Oktavas to my search feelers. Maybe I can find one for cheap before I commit to a pair.
I feel like any two single KSM137 or AT4051 mics would probably match well enough for my purposes, but not sure about these.
