Orange OR 120 with High Output PU ´s

1
Hey...

I have the following problem. I am currently trying to get a good distorted sound with the following setup. Fender Jaguar (Japan Reissue equipped with a Seymour Duncan SH-4 JB Humbucker) OR Epiphone SG (with the same PU) -> GAS 808 (pretty similar to TS 808) -> Orange OR 120.

I just don´t seem get a good distorted sound out of it. It is way to "thick" somehow. It´s hard to describe, it sounds kind compressed or something. I wanted to get it sound transparent and aggressive. I tried out a wide range of settings on both the pedal and the amplifier. Maybe it´s just the wrong amplifier to use with that kind of PU. I am glad for some recommendations. I get some okay results using a RAT instead of the 808, but the RAT is a little more fuzzy to my ears. I don´t want to use that one as a standard distortion pedal anymore.

I also play a Sovtek Mig 100 and it´s way easier to get good results out of that amp for that kind of sound. Thing is the Orange clean sound is so much nicer than the Sovtek´s.
It´s such a fine line between stupid and clever.

We have two guitarists in the band. I have two amps and one cab.
I´ll probably just try different guitars with the Orange, like a Tele or a Les Paul with 57 Classics, that don´t have that much output. I just hoped for someone to come along like: "Oh, i use quite a similar setup but with the "miraculous wonderful super stompbox" distortion pedal and it actually sounds great!" :)
But thanks for the advice anyway.

Actually, no. These are the two that i own. I also tried a Distortion+, a Pearl Distortion, Marshall Jackhammer(sic!), Route 66 Pedal and almost every distortion pedal that came into my hands. Liked the RAT best so far. That´s why i asked about the PU´s being the problem really.

Thanks for the flowers, sunshine.

The Orange tends to give a very foggy thick type of tone, and the TS808 is another midrange booster, so that combination probably lacks any transparency. I'd look into a treble booster of some sort and push the input of the amp, might do the trick for you. If you use an OD pedal, look out for one that is not the typical tubescreamer type, but gives a more even response. Keep the mids low and boost the treble.

A Dallas Rangemaster clone or a simple JFET booster (google it, make it yrself for 10 bucks) might work.

Orange amps are indeed mighty thick and fuzzy in the middle. Maybe use the RAT, but roll the filter knob in the middle all the way anticlockwise.
