Oh man, I had an audio engineer screw up today.
My wife does voiceover work. Almost all of it is still remote. This means we set up in my studio and I engineer locally. There is a zoom call so everyone can see everyone else, and then I connect to a remote engineer at the production company. We use software called ipdtl to send "high enough" resolution audio. I also record a safety backup at 24/48 here at home. I use Audacity because it seems the most fool proof for recording one mono audio track and doesn't interfere with the audio streaming.
Well, this morning the setup was different. we were doing ADR, so there was video involved. It was actually pretty easy. However, in my nervous state I booted up Audacity before plugging in the audio interface. Then I set everything else up. Because of this, Audacity defaulted to the built in microphone on my laptop. Meanwhile, I'm monitoring through my interface's control panel, and the remote engineer is getting the good audio. Since I'm just sitting quietly in the record room, my wife's voice is still getting picked up by the laptop mic, so I'm seeing level.
Anyway, about 45 minutes into the hour long session, I realize what I've done. I quickly reconfigure and try to get as much as I can. Luckily, there were no internet drop outs on the keeper takes but I still felt really stupid. I can do so many things at an expert level in the music tech and audio recording world, but throw me into the TV production worlds and the 10% I don't know makes me feel really shitty sometimes.

672aw man, it's hard not to but don't feel shitty - if it helps I've seen a number of truly great video experts do exactly that kind of thing.benadrian wrote: Tue Jul 12, 2022 5:19 pm Oh man, I had an audio engineer screw up today.

If it further makes you feel better, I'm an 'expert' at what I do and I just left a heavy duty vacuum pump running wide open two days ago for 16 hours, being a miracle it didn't start a fire.

673Last day here. With two teenage daughters and a wife that often still acts like a teenager. Am ready for a respite from all of the drama.
(I bought my ticket. I knew what I was getting into.)

674The drippy bathroom faucet needed replacement. The parts were so rusted/calcified, the knobs wouldn't fully unscrew. I took the first knob off with a hacksaw. It took 20 minutes cause I didn't want to saw into the wall, so it was an awkward angle. It made me pretty sore cause I'm feeble. I got smart and bought a metal blade for my hand tool and power tooled the rest of proper quick.

676I just got home from playing a rock show at Bremen Cafe in Milwaukee. Turnout was modest but better than expected for a Sunday night and it was lively and sweaty. All drum machine bands: Hobbyist from Chicago, Faux Fear from PA and us. I love live music.

678Beyoncé and Drake both make terrible music. How embarrassing for black and queer culture that you have these two monumental hacks purportedly bringing house music to the masses. Good lord. That woman has an insane amount of personal wealth, and to think that she couldn't throw some dollars to a writer or an agent to drop a genuine sick house beat goes to show that money can't buy taste. Just awful. I haven't been out much lately, or listen to much radio, but surely this can't be the summer jam - an early 90's preset that immediately brings to mind a better singer and better jam? As much as it pains me to admit this, at least, the very very least, the Drake song has a scintilla of some originality, but that doesn't make it good.
I bring this up because I just read an article about a dumb "dance" band called The Chainsmokers, and a space tourism company, World View, that will be launching them to the edge of space to be the first band to play in the stratosphere. Like, they couldn't think of anyone else? Anyone more relevant or important? All of that money at your disposal and the best you can come up with is The Chainsmokers.
Wealth makes you lazy and creatively bankrupt.

679What's even dumber about this (though I guess maybe nothing's dumber than the existence of The Chainsmokers?) is that actual astronauts have been playing music in actual space -- not just the stratosphere--for years:rsmurphy wrote: Tue Jul 19, 2022 5:14 pm

Posturing all around. I really hate that band. Machine Gun Kelly-levels of hate. Sister Machine Gun stratum of woe. Swedish House Mafia-layers of displeasure. Fucking useless.
